I thought one of the benefits of Bitcoin was the ability to remain anonymous. I would be hesitant to use coinbase because they require verification and a link to personal bank information. Are there any other wallets that do not require your bank details?

Yes!  :) You can find someone who is selling bitcoin in your neighborhood and pay cash.

Since this is still a new concept, I would imagine that there are some people just giving away bitcoins. Is it possible to earn free bitcoins? If this is possible, how quickly could someone get one full bitcoin.

I haven't seen any bitcoins for free.  Where did you hear about this Jodie?  I know our local radio station had a contest where they gave away a coin.  As they gave it to him, bitcoins were going through a painful process where one of the big bitcoin companies lost a bunch of bitcoins, so the value dropped dramatical from $900 to $500 a coin.

I'd love to know where to get Bitcoins for free! I'd like a sample, just so that I know what I'm buying. It's still a mystery to me I'm afraid, no matter how much I read about it.

I felt the same way when I first started researching it. Do you know anyone in person who has bitcoins? Knowing someone personally involved helped me boost my confidence and take some of the mystery of it.

Check out http://earnbitcoins.com/

Forgive my ignorance, but how do the sites listed in the link work?  Not literally, I mean: what benefit do they get from me playing a 'Minesweeper' style game, or solving a captcha?  Where do the bitcoins come from that they give as a reward?  I'm not doubting they're legit or anything, I just can't fathom it out!

It looks like some of the sites have a donation system.  One of them where you are paid to visit sites is probably paid by the websites themselves.  Every time someone clicks through the site the owner pays a percentage or fee.

Oh I see, so it's kind of a big marketing device?  I'm not very au fait with web marketing methods (as if you hadn't guessed!) but it sounds quite fun.  Have you ever done any of that kind of thing?

I might do if I had time, but unfortunately I don't.  It'd be a good way to keep the kids occupied over the summer holidays though, given how tech-savvy most of them are.  "Here you are kids, sit here and earn me bitcoins while I go out and earn regular money to pay for all the food you eat."   :o
